On the sidelines of announcing its Q4 FY 2008-09 results, Tata Motors has also announced that it has sold over 300,000 units of its Ace mini-truck since its launch in 2005 with 1.10 lakh units being notched up during the last fiscal. The Tata Ace is similar to a Japanese Kei Truck and has revolutionized the entire commercial vehicle industry with robust sales figures.

It is in competition with the prevalent three-wheeled goods carriers from Bajaj Auto, Piaggio, Mahindra and Force Motors. The Tata Ace succeeded in creating an entirely new segment that competitors are known to be working on different models to compete against the Tata Ace. In India, the one-tonner Ace costs around Rs.2.2 lakh. The 700cc 4-stroke, naturally aspirated, indirect injection diesel engine engine delivers a power of 16 hp (12 kW) at 3200 rpm and a torque of 3.8 mkg @ 2000 rpm.

According to auto industry sources, Tata Ace has created a new mini segment in India. Priced between Rs. 2.25 to 2.35 lakh, the company aims to convert three wheeler users to 4 wheelers. One of the idea that has made the launch of this vehicle might be that the government policy in India not to allow HMVs (that are categorized by vehicles weighing above 3 tonnes) to enter cities after 7 p.m. to reduce traffic jams and pollution. Tata has found the gap in the market and released Ace.

In its bid to enhance the fuel efficiency of its mini truck, Ace, Tata Motors has added stop-start technology to the vehicle. This technology, which is said to boost fuel economy by around 5-10 per cent, will add around Rs 10,000 to the Ace’s price – the new variant is priced at Rs. 3.03 lakh, ex-showroom Kolkata. The new Ace variant with stop-start tech also gets a new five-speed gearbox for enhanced drivability, and bigger, 13-inch wheels for increased ground clearance. The system is based on the simple principle of not burning fuel when it is not required.
